Cochrane is an independent international organisation which operates on a not-for-profit basis. It is dedicated to making up-to-date, accurate information about the effects of healthcare readily available worldwide. As such, Cochrane produces and disseminates systematic reviews of healthcare interventions and promotes the search for evidence in the form of clinical trials and other studies of interventions. Cochrane was founded in 1993 and named after the British epidemiologist, Archie Cochrane. It was formerly known as The Cochrane Collaboration.
Cochrane produces the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, which is part of the Cochrane Library, the definitive resource for evidence-based health care.
Cochrane Review authors are mostly healthcare professionals who author reviews on a voluntary basis. Cochrane's Central Editorial Service oversees the preparation and maintenance of the reviews, as well as the application of the rigorous quality standards for which Cochrane Reviews have become known.
The activities of the Collaboration are directed by an elected Governing Board and are supported by staff in various Cochrane groups around the world.
